A Few Labs Worth Discussing With Your Provider

There is no universal "perfect" lab panel. The right testing depends on your age, medical history, symptoms, medications, and personal goals. That said, there are several laboratory tests that are often overlooked but can provide valuable insight into your current health and future disease risk.

If appropriate for your situation, these are worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

Hemoglobin A1c

Measures your average blood sugar over the past three months, giving us a bigger picture than a single fasting glucose.

Many people are told their blood sugar is "normal" because one fasting glucose looks okay. But an A1c can reveal patterns that a single snapshot misses. Over time, elevated blood sugar can quietly damage your blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, eyes, and heart—often years before you feel symptoms. When interpreted alongside fasting glucose and fasting insulin, an A1c helps identify early metabolic changes while there's still time to reverse course.

Fasting Insulin

Measures how hard your body is working to keep your blood sugar normal.

This is one of our favorite preventive labs because insulin often rises 10–20 years before blood sugar or A1c become abnormal. That means you could be developing insulin resistance—even if you've been told you're "not diabetic."

Left untreated, insulin resistance increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, infertility, PCOS, Alzheimer's disease, and weight gain. Catching it early gives you the opportunity to make changes before these conditions develop.

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]

Lp(a) is an inherited cholesterol particle that significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and aortic valve disease.

Unlike traditional cholesterol, Lp(a) is determined almost entirely by your genetics and isn't included on a routine cholesterol panel. Because your level stays relatively stable throughout life, it usually only needs to be measured once.

We especially encourage women to ask for this test. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women, and many people with elevated Lp(a) have no idea they're at increased risk until something serious happens.

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)

ApoB measures the number of cholesterol particles that can become trapped in your arteries and form plaque.

A traditional cholesterol panel tells us how much cholesterol is being carried. ApoB tells us how many particles are doing the carrying, making it one of the strongest predictors of future heart disease.

Two people can have the exact same LDL cholesterol but very different risks for heart attack because one has far more artery-clogging particles than the other. ApoB helps identify risk much earlier and more accurately than cholesterol alone.

High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP)

Measures low-grade inflammation throughout your body.

Inflammation is your body's natural healing response, but when it stays elevated for months or years, it can quietly contribute to heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, and many chronic illnesses.

This test doesn't diagnose a specific disease, but it helps us understand whether inflammation may be increasing your risk and whether it's worth looking deeper into your lifestyle, nutrition, stress, sleep, or other underlying conditions.

Vitamin D (25-Hydroxy Vitamin D)

Vitamin D is much more than a vitamin—it acts like a hormone and affects nearly every system in your body.

Adequate levels support immune function, bone health, muscle strength, mood, energy, and overall health. Low levels have been associated with increased risk of fractures, infections, autoimmune disease, and poor muscle function.

Rather than guessing how much you need, testing allows treatment to be tailored to your body's actual needs.

A Comprehensive Thyroid Panel

Many people are told, "Your thyroid is normal," when only a TSH was checked.

While TSH is an important screening test, it doesn't tell the whole story. Depending on your symptoms, additional testing—including Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and Tg antibodies)—can provide a much more complete picture.

If you're struggling with fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, constipation, anxiety, depression, irregular periods, or feeling cold all the time, a more comprehensive thyroid evaluation may uncover problems that a TSH alone can miss.

An Age- and Sex-Appropriate Hormone Evaluation

Hormones influence far more than fertility.

They help regulate your energy, sleep, mood, metabolism, muscle mass, bone health, brain function, libido, and body composition.

When hormones become imbalanced, symptoms are often dismissed as "just getting older." The right evaluation can help identify whether changes in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, or other hormones may be contributing to how you're feeling.

The appropriate testing depends on your age, biological sex, symptoms, and stage of life—there is no one-size-fits-all hormone panel.

Ferritin

Ferritin measures your body's stored iron, not just the iron circulating in your bloodstream.

Many people have "normal" blood counts but still have low iron stores. Low ferritin can contribute to fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, poor exercise performance, restless legs, headaches, and difficulty concentrating long before anemia develops.

Identifying low ferritin early allows us to address the underlying cause and restore iron stores before symptoms become more severe.

The Goal

These certainly aren't the only labs that matter, and they aren't appropriate for everyone. Rather, they're examples of tests that can help create a more complete picture of your health when used thoughtfully.

The goal isn't to order more labs—it's to order the right labs for the right person at the right time.

Stay curious, ask questions, and partner with your healthcare provider. Informed conversations are one of the most powerful tools in preventive health.
